As EMS instructors navigate the process of finding more effective and engaging teaching methods, an
untapped pool of unique experiences sits in front of them in the form of their experiences and those
of their students. This is especially true in EMS, an industry that is oftentimes a second career or even
a volunteer opportunity on the side. The experiences of the instructor and his or her students may be
invaluable. That Pharmaceutical Sales Representative looking to become an EMT to help his
community may know more about pharmacology than anyone in the class (including the instructor). A
bartender certified in the Techniques of Alcohol Management who hopes to advance her career may
have something to add when learning to differentiate overdoses. Properly used, those experiences can
lend firsthand knowledge of many lessons as well as allow the students to feel like an important part
in the learning process.
